Post Creature Stats question

Hi.

(Have been away from Bethorm for a bit, so apologies if this is a daft question and I've missed something obvious.)

I've been rereading the rules, and was puzzled by the Melee/Missile/Magic defence ratings, e.g Mrur (p194).

Base for both Melee and Shield is DEFT (=9). Mrur has a Sword attack of 12, so therefore has 3 ranks of Sword skill? If it is using a sword to defend this would seem to give it Melee Defence of 2. If using a Medium Shield, the DEFT 9 = -1 +2 (Med shield) would need another +2 Shield Skill to get 3 defence. Does that seem right? It seems a bit odd that I need to back calculate the skills in this way.

Mrur Magic defence = 2. This uses Resist Sorcery skill (Will/-1). Mrur has WILL 11 which would imply Base Magic Def = 0, so does it have 2 ranks of Resist Sorcery skill?

You really never need to know what a creature's weapon or defensive skill scores are. You just need to know the final numbers. The type of shield the Mrur uses (Medium) is listed so that if it breaks, you can deduct the shield's parry bonus (which is +2; see p. 54) from the creature's defense. But that's really the only complexity you need to concern yourself with.

As for Magic Defense, creatures animated by otherplanar energy (such as the Undead) tend to be a bit more resistant to sorcery. So there's more going on than simply Resist Sorcery skill. But again, you pretty much never need to concern yourself with that - it's pre-figured into the Mrur's Magic Defense, so just use that.

Hope that helps!

Yes, no problem, it just came up because I was trying to work out how the creature stats had been generated (comes from years of playing RuneQuest) and I couldn't easily see how the Mrur had those stats.

thanks!

Understood 🙂

In general, I gave generic creatures a bonus of +2 above their base attributes scores in skills they reply on regularly.

So the Mrur, with a DEFT of 9, got 9+2=11 sword skill, +1 more from the sword itself (see p. 52) for a total of 12 to hit. It also got a shield skill of 9+2=11, +2 more from the medium shield's parry bonus (see p. 54) for a total of 11+2-10=3 melee and missile defense.

Not every creature strictly follows this pattern, however; I tweaked stats where necessary to make each creature as dangerous as it needed to be.

Makes sense to me. Thanks for the insight. (And I had forgotten about the additional +1 for a sword!)

No problem! I'm more than happy to geek out about the system's mechanics any time 😉

A related question (also relevant to the High and Dry thread). If a PC (say) is killed and returns as an Mrur or Shedra et al, do they keep their original HP, skills, etc, or are they just "ordinary" as per the rules?

It seems possible to make a PC with 40 HP who doesn't drop until zero HP(PHYS=12, Attribute+1, Healthy, Pain resistance). Could be a pretty nasty Mrur...

This is discussed in spell #139, Necrofacture.
