Post Ritual Spell Disruption?

Ritual spells cannot be cast while in melee. However, some spells take longer than 1 round to cast. I assume this means that if an opponent moves next to the caster before the spell is cast, then the spell will fail.

However, what happens if the caster is hit by a missile/spell/eye while casting? Does it also fail automatically, or is there a check, or does it not stop spell-casting because it wasn't a melee attack? I can't see any mention of this (may have missed it though!). Easiest thing to assume is that if the caster is hit, then their spell fails.

Ritual spells cannot be cast while in melee.

Ritual spells are limited in several little ways relative to Psychic spells. Psychic spells can be case while unmoving, slightly more armor is allowed while casting Psychic spells, Psychic spells don't require ritual paraphenalia, etc. However, to the best of my recollection, there is no specific prohibition against attempting to cast Ritual spells while in melee.

However, some spells take longer than 1 round to cast. I assume this means that if an opponent moves next to the caster before the spell is cast, then the spell will fail.

Unless I am mistaken, simply being adjacent to an attacker does not preclude casting spells with long prep times. Being incapacitated or killed by that attacker certainly would, of course.

Once again, as far as I can recall (and after a quick look through the book) 'being hit' either in melee or by a missile does not interrupt spell-casting per se. The limitations which *do* apply to spell-casting (limited armor, the fact that casting takes an Action and thus precludes defensive Actions such as Full Defense, and so on make casting while in melee generally not a great idea.

Um, now I am confused. The table on p80 (Sec 12.7.1) for spell casting check modifiers says "Ritual spells cannot be cast in melee at all"

Another question (as an aside) in earlier versions (S&G, Gardasiyal) there was a penalty to casting Generic and Temple spells, but this no longer seems to apply, unless I have missed it somewhere?

Aha! There it is, then 🙂

If I recall correctly (and as you've seen, I'm not always right), in earlier Tekumel games the Generic and Temple spells were both harder to cast, and harder to resist. Due to the way the mechanics for 'hitting' with a spell work in Bethorm, those two factore essentially cancel each other out.

Ok, that makes sense.

So for ritual casting in a melee (not *in* melee) does being hit while casting cause a spell to abort? I guess you've already spent the energy by then.
